The GRAND Valley

So what makes the Grand Valley so grand? How about every kind of outdoor activity you can imagine. The monument is just minuets away, with it's breathtaking views and kick ass trails for hiking and biking. The river goes right through town giving everyone a chance to raft, swim canoe, boat, tube, fish, kayak, on all different levels from difficult to easy going. There are a wide variety of landscapes from desert to mountains all within and hour. Some of the mountains are over 14,000 ft making it a hikers dream. Who wouldn't want to say they've climbed a 14,000 mountain. The desert offers a lot of off road trails for the 4x4 enthusiast as well as the mountains. For that reason alone, I moved to grand Junction. And school of course.
Besides having everything imaginable outside, Grand Junction also offers a lot of good dining, lodging and entertainment. We have the Avalon theatre where movies are shown still to this day, along with a drive in movie theatre that no one ever takes advantage of. Our main has many activities and shops to offer and is ranked really high in the United States. The community is large enough to offer entertainment but small enough to feel safe walking down the street or to raise your family. People seem to really care about you and know you by name if you frequent enough.
Grand Junction is also in a good location half way between Denver and Salt Lake City. If we want to get away and enjoy the big city for a weekend it is within reach. The airport is big enough to accommodate for good travel destinations without having to hop on four different plans just to get to a big enough airport to get you where you want to go. There is another plus to living in Grand Junction for the wine enthusiast. We are the only place that can grow grapes between the two major cities as well. People travel a long ways to enjoy wine tasting, and tour the local vineyards.
The weather in the Grand Valley is also amazing. Again contributing to the vast array of outdoor activities. We have a mild winter and fairly dry fall. Lots of sunshine and rarely a foggy day. But on the other hand if you like the snow and cold you can travel 30 minuets and be at our very own powder horn ski resort. The mesa offers some of the best snowmobiling as well. We have a wide variety in animal life ranging from deer and elk to moose and big horn sheep. Which also points out the great hunting and fishing in the area as well.
The crime rate in Grand Junction is at a minimum with news stories being more about local businesses and people doing good for their community rather than shooting everyone. The town is arranged in a way that would allow you to either ride your bike everywhere or take the great shuttle service available year round. There are a wide variety of jobs that are available and Grand Junction was just rated in the top 6 best places to live and work. It was also rated in the top 12 safest places to live, not to bad.

Research For Pet Abuse

What are the public perceptions of this theme?
The public has sympathy for animals but being human, we hold human life higher than animals, therefore we tend to have a little more time and money for human needs over animals. We feel bad for animals and most people want to give and help but in the end we hold human life higher than animals.
What is the problem?
People don't value animal life, if we put the same laws and punishment in place for animal abuse as we do for human abuse then there wouldn't be as big of problem.
Who is affected?
There is a lot of evidence pointing to the link between animal and human abuse. If a child grows up thinking that it is alright to treat animals poorly then what is to stop them from taking the next step and abusing another human. We need to educate everyone that it isn't alright, starting with our children.
What are the causes?
Some of the cause of pet abuse is what I just mentioned, lack of education, respect, and value of life. There aren't as many consequences for people so they don't even think twice.
Various stats related to the topic;
  • nearly 1 million animals a year are abused or killed in connection with domestic violence
  • more american households have more animals than children
  • there were 1,626 reported cases in 2008 in the US...30 in colorado

What are the cultural and social circumstances?
Pet abuse will only get worse, especially if we don't educate people and enforce stricter punishment.
Why is this an issue?
This is a problem because animals are at our mercy. They can't tell their story, it is up to humans to take care of them.
Who are the major organizations working for this cause/topic, and how do they promote themselves?
  • Pet-Abuse.com    Internet, phone, fax, email, mail
  • Humane society   Many shelters throughout the US, 10 million americans donate or are involved, internet, local shelters, TV
  • PAWS                    Progressive Animal Welfare Society, around since 1967, they shelter animals, rehabilitate, available on the internet, magazine, phone, employment
