Research For Pet Abuse

What are the public perceptions of this theme?
The public has sympathy for animals but being human, we hold human life higher than animals, therefore we tend to have a little more time and money for human needs over animals. We feel bad for animals and most people want to give and help but in the end we hold human life higher than animals.
What is the problem?
People don't value animal life, if we put the same laws and punishment in place for animal abuse as we do for human abuse then there wouldn't be as big of problem.
Who is affected?
There is a lot of evidence pointing to the link between animal and human abuse. If a child grows up thinking that it is alright to treat animals poorly then what is to stop them from taking the next step and abusing another human. We need to educate everyone that it isn't alright, starting with our children.
What are the causes?
Some of the cause of pet abuse is what I just mentioned, lack of education, respect, and value of life. There aren't as many consequences for people so they don't even think twice.
Various stats related to the topic;
  • nearly 1 million animals a year are abused or killed in connection with domestic violence
  • more american households have more animals than children
  • there were 1,626 reported cases in 2008 in the US...30 in colorado

What are the cultural and social circumstances?
Pet abuse will only get worse, especially if we don't educate people and enforce stricter punishment.
Why is this an issue?
This is a problem because animals are at our mercy. They can't tell their story, it is up to humans to take care of them.
Who are the major organizations working for this cause/topic, and how do they promote themselves?
  • Pet-Abuse.com    Internet, phone, fax, email, mail
  • Humane society   Many shelters throughout the US, 10 million americans donate or are involved, internet, local shelters, TV
  • PAWS                    Progressive Animal Welfare Society, around since 1967, they shelter animals, rehabilitate, available on the internet, magazine, phone, employment
